FLORIDA — A 34-year-old Auburndale man recently released from jail was arrested Monday after deputies found him with marijuana in Winter Haven, authorities said.
Polk County deputies said they discovered Matthew Wells sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car at Westwood Park. Officers noted a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When asked for his license, Wells provided a Florida ID and denied that he had been driving.
Wells told deputies he works as a coach at Advance Prep Academy and admitted to a prior arrest for marijuana possession. He handed over marijuana from the car, saying it belonged to him and his wife. He also acknowledged that he had recently served a five-month jail sentence and said he “just wanted to smoke.”
Wells was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail, where he was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“This is a perfect example of someone who clearly hasn’t learned from past mistakes. If you’re going to break the law in Polk County, expect to be held accountable—again and again if necessary,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.
