LOUISIANA — A teacher at Westdale Middle School was arrested Tuesday after allegedly being caught with cocaine during a random drug search, officials said.
According to sources, a drug-sniffing dog alerted staff to 47-year-old Virginia Somers, who was found with cocaine inside a wallet.
The drugs were tested and confirmed as cocaine. Somers reportedly told authorities the cocaine belonged to a friend who gave it to her at an LSU football tailgate on Saturday.
Officials also searched Somers’ vehicle, where they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia, including pipes. She now faces possession charges for drugs and paraphernalia.
Somers teaches Math Intervention at Westdale Middle School and has been with the district for more than a decade.
In a statement, the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System said, “this behavior is not condoned by our district and we remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and drug-free environment for all students and staff.” The district added that the matter is being handled according to its policies and procedures.
