GEORGIA — A 35-year-old man drowned Sunday evening while racing a friend in the water at Hard Labor Creek State Park, authorities said.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported that game wardens responded to the drowning call around 6 p.m.

Witnesses said the man, identified as Devise Blount of Morgan County, was racing to a buoy marker when he began struggling in the water. Bystanders attempted to rescue him but were unable to reach him.

Newton County Emergency Management divers recovered Blount’s body from about 15 feet of water around 9 p.m. The incident remains under investigation.
