
NORTH CAROLINA — Authorities are investigating the death of a 62-year-old male resident at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
The Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office reported that a detention officer called for a medical emergency Sunday at approximately 5:35 a.m. The resident was found unresponsive, and lifesaving measures were administered until medical personnel arrived. Despite efforts from Mecklenburg EMS and Charlotte Fire, the man was pronounced dead around 6:13 a.m. He had been in custody since June 2025.
Sheriff Garry McFadden released a statement expressing condolences and noting the difficulty of losing a life in custody.
Authorities said more information will be released after the resident’s family is notified.
The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation into the in-custody death, while the medical examiner determines the cause of death.
