Rideshare driver shot after picking up passenger in Virginia

VIRGINIA — A rideshare driver was shot Saturday night in Richmond’s East End after picking up a passenger, according to police. The suspected gunman is facing multiple charges.

Richmond Police said officers were first called at 11:39 p.m. on Aug. 23 to the 800 block of Old Denny Street for reports of gunfire. A witness told officers a man he knew had fired shots in the street.

Two minutes later, another call reported an injured driver parked in the 2700 block of East Main Street. When officers arrived, they found two men inside the vehicle — the driver, who had been shot, and his passenger. The driver was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger was not hurt. Police noted the car’s rear window had been shattered.

Investigators determined the shots were fired toward the rideshare vehicle shortly after the driver picked up the passenger.

Detectives arrested 46-year-old Elwood Lewis of Richmond and charged him with shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Police said additional charges are pending.

Anyone with information is asked to call Major Crimes Detective Sergeant M. Mocello at 804-646-6775.
