OHIO — A woman was killed and several others injured early Sunday morning following a police pursuit that ended in a crash, according to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle around 1:16 a.m. near St. Clair Avenue and East 13th Street after reports it was driving recklessly without headlights. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was suspected of operating under the influence and did not stop, fleeing eastbound on St. Clair Avenue. Deputies received supervisory approval to pursue the vehicle.

Two minutes later, the suspect’s vehicle collided with a civilian car at St. Clair Avenue and Addison Road. The 37-year-old woman driving that vehicle was taken to University Hospitals, where she was pronounced dead. A male passenger was also transported for evaluation but was not seriously injured.

The suspect and his two passengers — an adult woman and a 16-year-old girl — were hospitalized with serious injuries. A sheriff’s deputy was also injured and treated at University Hospitals.

Deputies reported finding multiple open containers of alcohol in the suspect’s vehicle.

The 24-year-old driver has been arrested and faces charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, suspected OVI, and multiple traffic offenses. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Unit and Detective Bureau, with assistance from the Cleveland Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit, are continuing the investigation in consultation with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
