VIRGINIA — A suspect is dead and a Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office deputy is injured following a high-speed chase and shooting early Saturday morning, according to authorities.
The incident began just after 5 a.m. on August 16 when an Amelia County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2005 Toyota Tacoma traveling more than 100 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 360.
The driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit involving Virginia State Police and Nottoway County deputies.
The chase ended near the intersection of Rocky Hill Road and eastbound Route 460 when the truck ran off the road into the woods. Police said the driver fled on foot and was pursued by deputies and a state trooper.
Officials said the suspect was shot and killed during the encounter. A Nottoway County deputy was also shot in the hand and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office is investigating. Authorities are working to identify the suspect and notify next of kin.
