ILLINOIS — An 18-year-old from St. Joseph died in a single-vehicle crash late Thursday night in rural Champaign County.
The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Homer Lake Road and County Road 2400E, southeast of St. Joseph. Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer confirmed that the driver, identified as Samuel A. Shonkwiler, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
According to Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman, the crash involved only Shonkwiler’s vehicle, which struck a utility pole at a high rate of speed.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
No other information has been released at this time.
