
MARYLAND — A traffic stop Tuesday night on Interstate 70 in Frederick County led to the seizure of suspected fentanyl and cocaine, and the arrest of a Cumberland man, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).
Around 10:31 p.m., a deputy conducted a stop on a westbound vehicle near New Design Road for an equipment violation.
During the stop, the deputy became suspicious of possible drug activity and requested assistance from a K9 unit.
The K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, prompting a search of the vehicle and its occupants.
Authorities said they discovered 33 containers of suspected fentanyl, weighing approximately 45.7 grams, and 12 containers of suspected cocaine, totaling about 8.4 grams. The drugs were reportedly concealed on the passenger.
Deputies arrested 38-year-old Thomas Smallwood of Cumberland. He is currently under supervision by the Maryland Department of Parole & Probation for a 2022 armed robbery conviction in Baltimore City.
Smallwood was transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. He faces multiple charges, including:
- CDS Possession of a Large Amount, Fentanyl (Felony)
- CDS Possession with Intent to Distribute, Fentanyl (Felony)
- CDS Possession with Intent to Distribute, Cocaine (Felony)
- CDS Possession Not Cannabis, Fentanyl (Misdemeanor)
- CDS Possession Not Cannabis, Cocaine (Misdemeanor)
