INDIANA — A semitruck hauling computers caught fire Wednesday morning on Interstate 65, shutting down all southbound lanes near the 209-mile marker, about six miles south of the Rensselaer exit.
According to the Indiana State Police, the truck caught fire after striking an object in the roadway.
Photos from the scene show that both the cab and trailer were mostly destroyed by the flames.
Cleanup efforts were complicated by the truck’s cargo—computers with lithium-ion batteries—which reportedly popped and reignited during the response. Despite the severity of the fire, no injuries were reported.
All southbound lanes of I-65 remain closed with traffic backed up for several miles.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is assessing damage to the roadway, as the fire caused asphalt damage in the area.
Traffic is being diverted onto State Road 14, nearly 20 miles north of the crash site. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
