COLUMBUS — A Columbus man was sentenced Monday to at least 11 years in prison for the death of a pedestrian he struck with his vehicle three years ago.
Osman Aweys, 40, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 death of a 30-year-old man.
Originally charged with both murder and involuntary manslaughter, the murder charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.
The incident occurred on September 26, 2021, at the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Holly Hill Road in west Columbus. Columbus Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Officers found the victim in the parking lot of the Country Food Store, and he was transported to Grant Medical Center with serious injuries. He later died from those injuries.
The following day, police located Aweys asleep in his vehicle on the 3900 block of Sullivant Avenue and arrested him.
At the time, investigators believed Aweys had intentionally hit the victim before fleeing the scene.
Aweys was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years and a maximum of 16.5 years in prison, marking the end of a case that has weighed heavily on the west Columbus community.
