TENNESSEE — A Cookeville man was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash Friday evening that temporarily shut down all eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the I-440 junction.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported the overturned vehicle at 6:37 p.m. near mile marker 213.2.

According to a Metro Police investigation, 22-year-old Derrick Borchardt II was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer with a 22-year-old passenger when the vehicle began erratically switching lanes.

The SUV veered to the far right lane before abruptly turning back left and striking a rock wall.

The impact caused the vehicle to overturn and land on its passenger side.

Borchardt was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger sustained minor injuries.

Metro Police believe speed and intoxication were factors in the crash.

The passenger reportedly told officers they had consumed alcohol before the accident, and investigators found open alcohol containers inside the vehicle.
