SOUTH CAROLINA — A Myrtle Beach man is $20,000 richer after buying a Mega Millions lottery ticket on a whim.
The winner told South Carolina Education Lottery officials he has been playing the lottery for more than 40 years, but the winning ticket came from a game he does not usually play.
The ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Mega Ball in the June 5 Mega Millions drawing, missing the jackpot by just one number.
“It was my lucky day,” the winner said.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Publix grocery store on Oakheart Road in Myrtle Beach. The retailer received a $200 commission for selling the winning ticket.
According to lottery officials, the odds of matching four white ball numbers and the Mega Ball to win a $20,000 prize in Mega Millions are 1 in 893,761.
