OHIO — One person was killed Friday afternoon after a tractor-trailer lost a tire, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving at least eight vehicles on Interstate 70 in downtown Columbus.
The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on eastbound I-70, just west of the Miller Avenue and Kelton Avenue exits, according to a Columbus police dispatcher.
Police said an eastbound semi-truck lost a tire, which struck another vehicle. The impact caused that vehicle to crash, setting off a domino effect involving at least seven additional vehicles.
One person died as a result of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
The crash forced the closure of both directions of Interstate 70 while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
