OHIO — A woman was killed and several other people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Elyria on Friday, according to fire officials.

The crash happened shortly before noon in the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike, just west of the Gulf Road overpass bridge.

Elyria Fire Chief Joe Vargo said multiple people were hurt in the collision, including a woman who suffered fatal injuries. First responders provided emergency medical care at the scene, and a MetroHealth Life Flight helicopter was dispatched to transport her to a Cleveland hospital. However, she died at the scene before she could be flown for treatment.

At least two other people were transported by LifeCare Ambulance to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

The eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were completely closed during the emergency response. As of 2:15 p.m. Friday, Elyria firefighters remained at the scene assisting with traffic control.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
