VIRGINIA — An Abingdon man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly brandishing a firearm and leading police on a pursuit that ended in a crash involving two civilian vehicles, according to the Abingdon Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the 600 block of Cummings Street around 7:15 p.m. following reports of a man waving a gun and yelling behind a business.
When officers arrived, they located 29-year-old Christian Clutter sitting in a parked Chevrolet Equinox. Authorities said a loud noise believed to be a gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle before Clutter drove away, prompting a police pursuit.
According to police, Clutter traveled north on Cummings Street before an officer performed a PIT maneuver at the intersection of Cummings Street and West Main Street. Investigators said Clutter continued driving after the maneuver and headed south on Cummings Street.
The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle collided with two vehicles not involved in the chase at the intersection of Cummings Street and Cook Street. Police said no injuries were reported in the crash.
Clutter was taken into custody, and officers recovered two firearms during a search of the vehicle.
He is charged with felony eluding, brandishing a firearm, first-offense driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration above .20%, reckless driving, driving without a valid license and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Police said additional charges are pending. The investigation remains ongoing.
