The possibility of another Buc-ee’s opening in Alabama

0

ALABAMA — Alabama already has multiple Buc-ee’s locations, including stores in Leeds, Auburn and Athens. Those travel centers provide coverage along Interstate 20, Interstate 65 and Interstate 85, helping establish Alabama as one of the company’s key markets in the Southeast.

However, as Buc-ee’s continues expanding across the country, there are still several areas of Alabama that could potentially support additional locations. While the company has announced no new Alabama projects, the state’s extensive interstate network and growing tourism industry make further expansion a realistic possibility.

Why Another Alabama Location Makes Sense

Alabama sits along several major transportation corridors, including Interstate 10, Interstate 20, Interstate 22, Interstate 59, Interstate 65 and Interstate 85.

The state also attracts millions of visitors annually to Gulf Coast beaches, college football events, outdoor recreation destinations and growing metropolitan areas. Although Buc-ee’s already has a presence in central and northern Alabama, large portions of southern and western Alabama remain outside the convenient reach of existing locations.

Most Likely Alabama Locations

Mobile Area (Interstate 10)

The Mobile area may be the strongest candidate for another Alabama Buc-ee’s.

Located along Interstate 10 near the Gulf Coast, Mobile serves as a major gateway between Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. The corridor experiences heavy tourism, freight and interstate traffic throughout the year.

A Buc-ee’s near a major Interstate 10 interchange would provide coverage for southwest Alabama while attracting travelers headed to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Florida’s Panhandle.

Gulf Shores and Baldwin County (Interstate 10 Corridor)

Baldwin County continues to be one of the fastest-growing regions in Alabama.

The area’s tourism industry draws millions of visitors annually, and traffic increases significantly during peak vacation seasons. A location near the Interstate 10 corridor serving Gulf Coast traffic could become one of the busiest travel centers in the state.

Tuscaloosa Area (Interstate 20/59)

Tuscaloosa represents another logical possibility.

Located along Interstate 20/59 between Birmingham and Mississippi, the city attracts substantial traffic due to the University of Alabama, tourism and commercial activity. A location on the outskirts of the metropolitan area would serve both interstate travelers and local residents.

Montgomery Area (Interstate 65 and Interstate 85)

Although Auburn and Leeds already provide coverage in eastern Alabama, the Montgomery region remains a major transportation crossroads.

The intersection of Interstate 65 and Interstate 85 carries significant traffic moving between Tennessee, Florida, Georgia and the Gulf Coast. A location near one of the major interchanges could fit Buc-ee’s expansion strategy.

Dothan Area (U.S. 231 and Future Interstate Corridors)

Dothan serves as a gateway between Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

While the city lacks the interstate access Buc-ee’s typically prioritizes, its strategic location and growing population could make it a long-term possibility if the company expands deeper into southern Alabama.

Less Likely but Possible

The Huntsville region continues to grow rapidly, but the existing Athens location already provides coverage for much of northern Alabama and Interstate 65 traffic.

Likewise, another Birmingham-area store appears less likely given the presence of the established Leeds location along Interstate 20.

What Happens Next?

At present, Buc-ee’s has not announced any plans for another Alabama location. The company remains focused on projects underway across several states and continuing expansion into new markets.

However, Alabama’s strong interstate network, Gulf Coast tourism and growing population make it one of the states that could realistically support additional Buc-ee’s locations in the future.

If another Alabama store is eventually built, the Mobile area and Baldwin County appear to offer the strongest combination of traffic, tourism and strategic positioning. Tuscaloosa and Montgomery also remain realistic possibilities based on the company’s established expansion patterns.

While no new Alabama Buc-ee’s has been announced, the state’s transportation advantages and tourism economy suggest further growth cannot be ruled out as the company continues expanding across the United States.
