Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for parts of Virginia

VIRGINIA — Portions of Northern Virginia remain under a severe thunderstorm watch Saturday evening as strong storms move across the region with the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 278 remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Loudoun County and several jurisdictions in Northern Virginia, including Fairfax County, Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, the City of Fairfax and the City of Falls Church.

Communities included in the watch area include Leesburg, Sterling, Dulles International Airport, Fairfax, Fairfax Station, Burke, Chantilly, McLean, Reston, Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church.

Forecasters warn that thunderstorms moving through the region may become severe, with damaging wind gusts posing the greatest threat. Large hail, dangerous lightning and localized flooding from heavy rainfall are also possible.

Residents are encouraged to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the evening and be prepared to seek shelter if severe thunderstorm warnings are issued for their area.

The watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. as meteorologists continue to track storms moving across Northern Virginia.
