LOUISIANA — Louisiana is poised to become the next state to join the growing Buc-ee’s footprint, with the company moving forward on plans for its first location in Ruston. As construction plans advance, the question is no longer whether Buc-ee’s is coming to Louisiana, but whether additional locations could eventually follow.
The Texas-based travel center chain has expanded rapidly across the South, Midwest and East Coast in recent years, targeting major interstate corridors, tourism markets and fast-growing regions. Louisiana’s location along key transportation routes and its strong tourism economy make it one of the states that could potentially support more than one Buc-ee’s location.
Ruston Becomes Louisiana’s First Buc-ee’s
Buc-ee’s has announced plans to build its first Louisiana location near Ruston along Interstate 20 in Lincoln Parish.
The proposed travel center is expected to follow the company’s familiar model, featuring dozens of fuel pumps, a large convenience store and extensive parking facilities. The site was selected largely because of its visibility from Interstate 20 and its ability to serve travelers moving between Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and the southeastern United States.
The Ruston project represents Buc-ee’s first entry into Louisiana and places the company along one of the state’s most important east-west travel corridors.
Why Louisiana Could Support Additional Locations
While Ruston will provide coverage for northern Louisiana and Interstate 20 traffic, much of the state remains outside the convenient reach of the planned location.
Louisiana is crossed by several major highways, including Interstate 10, Interstate 12, Interstate 20, Interstate 49, Interstate 55 and Interstate 59. Combined with the state’s tourism industry, freight traffic and growing metropolitan areas, those routes create several logical opportunities for future expansion.
Most Likely Future Louisiana Locations
Lafayette Area (Interstate 10)
The Lafayette region may be the strongest candidate for a second Louisiana Buc-ee’s.
Located along Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and Lake Charles, Lafayette serves as a major regional hub for Acadiana and experiences heavy interstate traffic. The area’s location would allow Buc-ee’s to serve travelers moving between Texas, Louisiana and Florida while capturing local traffic from one of the state’s fastest-growing regions.
Baton Rouge Area (Interstate 10 and Interstate 12)
The Baton Rouge metropolitan area is another logical possibility.
As Louisiana’s capital and second-largest metropolitan area, Baton Rouge generates substantial commuter, tourism and commercial traffic. A location on the outskirts of the city near a major interstate interchange would fit Buc-ee’s preference for highly visible highway sites.
Hammond Area (Interstate 12 and Interstate 55)
Hammond sits at one of Louisiana’s most important transportation crossroads.
The intersection of Interstate 12 and Interstate 55 carries traffic between New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Mississippi and the Midwest. The area’s strategic location makes it particularly attractive for a large travel center development.
Slidell Area (Interstate 10, Interstate 12 and Interstate 59)
Slidell provides another compelling option.
Located near the Mississippi border, the city sits at the convergence of three major interstate highways and serves travelers moving throughout the Gulf Coast region. A Buc-ee’s there would attract traffic from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
Lake Charles Area (Interstate 10)
Lake Charles remains another possibility because of its proximity to Texas and its position along Interstate 10.
The corridor experiences significant traffic from travelers heading between Houston, Louisiana and the rest of the Gulf Coast.
Less Likely but Possible
The New Orleans metropolitan area has the traffic to support a Buc-ee’s, but development constraints, higher land costs and limited availability of large sites could make surrounding communities more attractive.
Similarly, additional locations along Interstate 20 near Ruston may be less likely due to overlap with the planned store.
What Happens Next?
For now, Buc-ee’s remains focused on bringing its first Louisiana location to Ruston. The project represents a significant milestone for the company as it continues expanding across the South and beyond.
However, Louisiana’s highway network, tourism industry and strategic location along major Gulf Coast travel routes suggest the state could eventually support multiple Buc-ee’s locations. If future expansion occurs, Lafayette, Hammond, Slidell and Baton Rouge appear to be among the strongest candidates based on the company’s established development patterns.
While no additional Louisiana stores have been announced, the state’s transportation advantages make further Buc-ee’s growth a realistic possibility in the years ahead.
