TENNESSEE — A 22-year-old South Carolina man and former state cross country champion died following a single-vehicle crash in Nashville, according to police.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said Zander Jeffcoat of Gilbert was driving a BMW X3 at about 3 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 8th Avenue South and Wedgewood Avenue when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a light pole.
Jeffcoat was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
State athletic records show Jeffcoat won the South Carolina Class AAAAA cross country championship in 2020 with a time of 15:24.93 while competing for Lexington High School.
In a social media post, the Lexington High School Wildcat Track and Field program remembered Jeffcoat as a team captain and dedicated runner who inspired his teammates.
“We are thankful for the community who has supported us through this time and send our condolences to the Jeffcoat Family,” the team said in a statement.
A visitation is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home’s Lexington Chapel. A memorial service is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Horeb Church in Lexington.
The crash remains under investigation.
