INDIANA — An Evansville man was arrested Friday night after a traffic stop led police to discover suspected crack cocaine and marijuana-related products inside his vehicle.

According to Evansville Police, officers stopped a vehicle driven by 47-year-old Desawn Pope shortly after 10 p.m. near North First Avenue and West Illinois Street because it had an inoperable headlight.

When an officer approached the vehicle, police said he detected the odor of burnt marijuana. When asked about it, Pope reportedly told officers he had recently attended a party and that there might be a marijuana “roach clip” inside the vehicle.

Police conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and found a plastic baggie containing a white rock-like substance in the center console. Authorities said Pope denied knowing anything about the substance.

Officers also located two THC vape devices inside the vehicle. The rock-like substance was field-tested and returned a positive result for crack cocaine, according to police.

Pope was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail.

He faces charges of possession of a controlled substance involving cocaine or a narcotic drug and possession of marijuana.

All charges are allegations, and Pope is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
