FLORIDA — A woman who had been snorkeling near a South Florida state park was found dead after washing ashore on a beach Wednesday evening, according to police.

The Hollywood Police Department said officers responded around 8 p.m. to the area of New Mexico Street and the beach after receiving reports of a woman who had washed ashore.

Investigators determined the woman had been snorkeling earlier in the day near Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park.

The discovery prompted a response from detectives with the Hollywood Police Department’s Homicide Unit, members of the Crime Scene Unit and an investigator with the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is assisting with the investigation.

The woman’s identity has not been released, and police said her next of kin had not yet been notified.

Officials have not announced a cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
