
ILLINOIS — Two people were arrested on drug and weapons charges after allegedly fleeing from police during a traffic stop Wednesday night in Rockford.
According to the Rockford Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle around 10 p.m. near Preston Street and Newport Avenue that was believed to be connected to an earlier incident.
Police said 18-year-old Andres Whitaker and a 17-year-old male ran from the vehicle but were apprehended a short time later.
During the investigation, officers recovered more than 72 grams of cannabis, more than 20 Ecstasy pills, a loaded handgun, ammunition and cash.
The 17-year-old faces charges including armed violence, possession with intent to deliver Ecstasy, possession with intent to deliver cannabis, two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and resisting arrest. He is being held in juvenile detention.
Whitaker was charged with criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, illegal possession of ammunition and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail pending a court appearance.
Police said additional charges and arrests may be possible as the investigation continues.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
