One person arrested after multi-county police chase in Florida ends in large drug bust

FLORIDA — A traffic stop attempt on Interstate 75 turned into a cross-county pursuit and drug bust early Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the incident began shortly after midnight when a trooper conducting traffic enforcement on I-75 in Hillsborough County spotted a black Ford Mustang traveling at an estimated 122 mph. The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled.

During the pursuit, the Mustang reportedly turned off its headlights, causing the trooper to lose sight of the vehicle. A short time later, another trooper located the Mustang and attempted another traffic stop, but the driver again refused to stop.

According to FHP, the Mustang exited I-75 onto State Road 54 in Pasco County and entered a neighborhood, where it became disabled after striking a curb and then a tree.

Troopers identified the driver as 32-year-old Kenny Bell. Authorities said Bell then fled into a wooded area on foot before a K-9 unit was called to assist. Bell later surrendered and approached troopers with his hands raised.

Investigators reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from Bell and the vehicle. Troopers also noted Bell had bloodshot eyes and slowed speech. Bell was asked to provide a urine sample but refused, according to his arrest report.

A search of the Mustang led to the discovery of approximately 15 pounds of marijuana, cash, scales and other drug-related paraphernalia, FHP said.

Bell was arrested and charged with DUI, refusal to submit to testing, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and aggravated fleeing.
