NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed in an overnight tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 85 near the Mecklenburg-Gaston County line early Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on June 2 along the southbound lanes of I-85 between the Catawba River and the Interstate 485 interchange.
According to authorities, a tractor-trailer left the interstate and traveled down an embankment. Officials have not yet determined what caused the truck to leave the roadway, and it remains unclear whether any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Emergency responders worked through the early morning hours at the scene. A wrecker was later used to pull the damaged truck back up to the roadway.
Paramedics confirmed that one person died in the crash. No other injuries were reported, and no additional hospitalizations occurred.
Firefighters, officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene and continued investigating Tuesday morning.
The crash caused several miles of traffic backups on I-85 South, with congestion stretching into Gaston County. Delays remained in place for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the incident.
The identity of the person killed has not been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
