FLORIDA — A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after an e-dirt bike crash involving a pickup truck Friday night in Pinellas Park, according to police.
The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. on 70th Avenue.
Investigators said the teenager was riding the e-dirt bike in the main travel lanes of the roadway when the collision happened. Police said the bike was not equipped with lights, and the teen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
According to authorities, a pickup truck traveling on 70th Avenue struck the dirt bike from behind while it was in motion.
The driver of the truck, a 71-year-old Pinellas Park man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The teenager suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police said speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.
Authorities noted that operating an e-dirt bike on Florida roadways is illegal. State law requires e-bicycles to have operational pedals and limits their speed to 28 mph.
The investigation remains ongoing.
