MICHIGAN — A police chase that began in Southfield ended in a fiery crash in Detroit early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

According to police, officers responded just after 3 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, to a reported car theft in progress in Southfield. When officers arrived, they found three suspects at the scene. One suspect fled on foot while two others drove away in a vehicle.

Police said the suspect who ran away was later arrested and released to a guardian.

Officers then spotted the fleeing vehicle traveling south on the Lodge Freeway near Evergreen Road and initiated a pursuit into Detroit. The chase continued until the vehicle exited the freeway at Grand River Avenue and crashed on Southfield Service Drive.

Authorities said the vehicle caught fire shortly after the crash. Both occupants were safely removed from the car and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries before later being taken to the Southfield Detention Center.

Police have not released additional information about the suspects. An investigation remains ongoing.
