
NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed Tuesday evening following a fiery crash involving two tractor-trailers and a car on Interstate 85 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. on May 12 on I-85 North near the Peach Orchard Road exit in Salisbury.
Officials said the collision involved two tractor-trailers and a passenger vehicle that was nearly completely crushed in the wreck. At least one of the tractor-trailers caught fire, sending thick black smoke into the air.
Firefighters at the scene confirmed that one person died in the crash. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victim.
Emergency crews worked for several hours at the crash site, including in a ditch near the interstate, where crews appeared to be containing debris or spilled materials. Portions of I-85 remained closed until around 1 a.m. Wednesday before reopening.
Investigators have not yet said what caused the crash. State troopers are continuing to investigate.
