VIRGINIA — A Lynchburg man was arrested following a traffic stop in Altavista that led to the seizure of suspected drugs, ammunition and other items, according to the Altavista Police Department.

Police said Officer Coleman Farmer conducted a traffic stop around 8:53 p.m. on May 8 for an equipment violation within the town limits of Altavista.

During the stop, authorities said Cpl. Earhart deployed narcotics detection K9 Xero to conduct a free-air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. Police said the K9 gave a positive alert indicating the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle.

According to investigators, a search of the vehicle uncovered suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, assorted pills, marijuana, ammunition, multiple cell phones, scales and U.S. currency.

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Robert Deshawn Barbour of Lynchburg.

Barbour was charged with distribution of a Schedule I/II controlled substance, distribution of a Schedule I/II controlled substance involving 10 grams or more of methamphetamine, possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance involving crack cocaine, and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

He was transported to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority facility in Rustburg, where authorities said he is being held without bond.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Altavista Police Department at 434-369-7425.
