SOUTH CAROLINA — A deputy attempting to help motorists with a broken-down motorcycle in Oconee County instead uncovered a large quantity of methamphetamine and arrested a wanted man, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened April 24 when a deputy on routine patrol found a motorcycle disabled near West-Oak Highway and Bruce Road. Authorities said a man and woman were standing beside the motorcycle when the deputy stopped to assist them.

According to investigators, the man ran away as the deputy approached. Although he escaped at the time, deputies found a camouflage bag nearby containing identification and approximately 249 grams of methamphetamine, which is more than half a pound.

Investigators later identified the suspect as James Henry Nix. The woman who was with him was released and not charged.

Nix was arrested May 5 and served with an outstanding general sessions bench warrant along with a trafficking methamphetamine charge connected to the April 24 incident.

He remains in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center.
