LOUISIANA — Authorities have recovered a body found floating in waters near the Chandeleur Islands, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said deputies were notified around 3:30 p.m. Monday after a body was spotted in the water nearly 50 miles off the coast of St. Bernard Parish, but still within parish jurisdiction.

Due to the remote offshore location and limited visibility, recovery efforts were delayed until early Tuesday morning. Crews began operations around 5 a.m.

The body was recovered shortly after 10 a.m. by the sheriff’s office Marine Division, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, United Cajun Navy and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Authorities said the body will be transported to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. The identity and age of the individual have not yet been released.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office or Crimestoppers.
