TENNESSEE — Two people are facing charges after firearms were discovered in vehicles at separate high school proms in Rutherford County, according to authorities.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said school resource officers were checking vehicles for alcohol when the weapons were found.

At a prom for La Vergne High School held Saturday at the Fountains in Murfreesboro, deputies located a Glock 9mm handgun inside a rental car belonging to an adult student. Authorities charged 19-year-old Trevor Carter with possession of a weapon at a school function. He was later released on a $2,000 bond from the county detention center.

In a separate incident, deputies found an AR-15 pistol in a vehicle at Stewarts Creek High School’s prom, which was held April 25 at Middle Tennessee State University. Deangelow Davis, 18, of Nashville, who was attending as a guest, was charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds and simple possession of marijuana. He was released on a $1,500 bond.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Rutherford County Schools said it will continue working with the sheriff’s office to increase security measures at school events, including scanning vehicles and monitoring parking areas during proms.
