ALABAMA — A contract nurse was arrested Saturday morning after authorities say she attempted to smuggle contraband into an Alabama prison.

According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, the incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. during a routine entry screening at a correctional facility in Montgomery.

Officials said a K-9 unit alerted to the nurse, identified as Ashleigh Maxwell, prompting officers to detain her. A subsequent search reportedly led to the discovery of 12 Oxycodone pills, which were seized.

Maxwell was charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband and illegal possession of prescription medication. She was later booked into the Limestone County Jail.

Corrections Commissioner Greg Lovelace said the case highlights ongoing challenges with contraband in prisons and the effectiveness of current security measures.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional charges could be filed.
