NORTH CAROLINA — A Kinston man is facing multiple charges after deputies discovered a firearm and drugs during a traffic stop, according to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred April 29 while detectives with the sheriff’s office Narcotics Unit, along with patrol deputies, were conducting proactive patrol in the area of Highway 11 South. Authorities said a vehicle was stopped after deputies detected the odor of marijuana.
During the stop, deputies identified a passenger as Jamie Artis of Kinston. Investigators reported finding a 9mm handgun in Artis’ possession. Further investigation revealed that Artis is a convicted felon, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
Artis was taken into custody and transported to the Lenoir County Jail. While being processed, detention staff reportedly found a burnt cigarillo containing marijuana in the area where Artis had been.
He is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance inside a jail or prison. Artis is currently being held in the Lenoir County Jail without bond.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
