ALABAMA — A search is underway for a missing fisherman after he fell into the water at a pier in Mobile County early Thursday morning, according to authorities.
Officials say a 19-year-old man was fishing with three others at Cedar Point Pier when he fell into the water and was swept away by strong currents.
A representative with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call reporting the incident came in around 2 a.m., prompting a search and rescue response.
The man had been sitting on the pier’s banister attempting to untangle fishing line when he lost his footing and fell backward into the water. Authorities say the current was moving quickly at the time, carrying the man underneath a nearby bridge.
Officials said the fisherman was briefly able to hold onto the pier’s structure, but was unable to reach life-saving buoys thrown by responders and eventually lost his grip.
Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Flotilla and the Dauphin Island Police Department are assisting in the ongoing search.
The investigation and search efforts remain ongoing.
