OHIO — A Las Vegas man has been charged in connection with a crash on Cleveland’s West Side that left one person dead and several others injured, according to police.

Zayd Alameen, 22, is facing charges of aggravated vehicular assault and aggravated vehicular homicide. He was arraigned Monday, and his bond was set at $50,000.

The crash happened around 5:20 p.m. Friday at the intersection of West 150th Street and Lorain Avenue.

Investigators said a 2017 GMC Acadia was speeding westbound on Lorain Avenue when it changed lanes and struck two other vehicles. The SUV then went off the roadway and hit a fire hydrant.

One of the vehicles that was struck was pushed into a fourth vehicle before crossing into eastbound traffic and hitting a fifth car, police said.

Five people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of the GMC and four others ranging in age from 21 to 54.

The 54-year-old victim later died from his injuries. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as James Michael Cook of Fairview.

Authorities later determined the GMC had been stolen shortly before the crash from the 3700 block of West 130th Street. Police said the vehicle had been left running in a driveway when it was taken.

The Cleveland Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

Alameen is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on May 4.
