OHIO — Norfolk Southern Corporation has announced the 2025 schedule for its Safety Train, a mobile training initiative designed to equip first responders with the knowledge and tools necessary to handle rail emergencies.
This year’s schedule includes two stops in Ohio: Conneaut during the week of June 23 and Macedonia during the week of July 14.
The Safety Train, part of Norfolk Southern’s Operation Awareness & Response (OAR) program, provides hands-on, free training for emergency responders across the company’s 22-state rail network.
The train features specially equipped classroom box cars and tank cars, offering in-depth instruction on hazardous materials handling, rail operations, and emergency response techniques.
“Though major rail emergencies are rare, collaboration between railroad teams and first responders on the scene is critical,” said Robert Wood, Norfolk Southern Director Hazardous Materials.
“By offering real-world scenarios and expert guidance, Norfolk Southern’s Safety Train is helping to make our communities safer and more prepared.”
Launched in 2015, the OAR program aims to connect Norfolk Southern communities with essential safety training and resources.
Last year, over 5,500 first responders participated in OAR training sessions, reflecting the company’s commitment to fostering collaboration between railroads and emergency responders.
In addition to Ohio, the Safety Train will make stops in 14 other locations across the country, beginning in Norfolk, Virginia, in March.
