MICHIGAN — A driver was killed and a passenger remains in critical condition following a crash involving a construction vehicle early Sunday morning in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.
Troopers responded around 7:45 a.m. April 19 to a crash along the southbound Lodge Freeway near Wyoming Avenue.
Investigators said a construction zone had been set up, blocking the left and middle lanes, with an unoccupied construction vehicle positioned in the left lane. Workers were outside placing cones when one of them noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in that lane.
Police said the driver failed to move over and crashed into the rear of the construction vehicle.
The driver, identified as a 23-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a 30-year-old man from Southfield, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
No construction workers or others were injured in the crash.
The freeway was closed at Wyoming Avenue for several hours as authorities investigated.
Michigan State Police reminded drivers to slow down and move over in work zones, especially with National Work Zone Awareness Week approaching.
The crash remains under investigation.
