FLORIDA — A man is dead after police say he was shot by a homeowner while attempting to break into a residence early Saturday morning.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, officers responded around 12:20 a.m. to a home in the 3000 block of 2nd Avenue North following reports of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they found a 46-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Investigators said the man had crashed his vehicle in the area before fleeing the scene and ending up in the backyard of the home. The circumstances surrounding that crash remain unclear.

Police said the man then attempted to break into the residence from the rear of the property, which woke the homeowner. The homeowner ordered the man to leave, but he continued trying to enter the home.

The homeowner then shot the suspect, police said.

Authorities said three adults and a child were inside the home at the time of the incident. No one else was injured.

The identities of both the deceased man and the homeowner have not been released. Police said the homeowner has not been charged at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
