
TENNESSEE — Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 in Smyrna early Thursday morning, according to authorities.
The crash occurred in the westbound lanes near mile marker 67 between Almaville Road and Sam Ridley Parkway around 12:45 a.m.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado struck the rear of a semi-truck and became lodged underneath the vehicle.
Officials identified the victims as a 72-year-old man from Kentucky and a 58-year-old woman from Tennessee. The driver of the semi, a 57-year-old man, was not injured.
Authorities said diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway following the crash, prompting a hazardous materials team to respond for cleanup.
The roadway was closed for several hours before reopening around 6 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
