Tornados possible in parts of Iowa

IOWA — Parts of Iowa are facing an elevated threat of severe weather, including the potential for tornadoes, as storms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters have placed much of Iowa under an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms, indicating a higher likelihood of significant weather impacts. The primary threats include large to giant hail, damaging wind gusts and several tornadoes, some of which could be strong.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

Meteorologists say conditions will become increasingly favorable for severe storms as the day progresses.

A warm, moist air mass combined with strong atmospheric instability is expected to fuel storm development by mid to late afternoon. Initial storms are expected to form along a boundary stretching across eastern Iowa and could quickly intensify into supercells — a type of storm capable of producing tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center noted that atmospheric conditions, including high instability and increasing wind shear, could support the development of intense tornadoes, particularly with the strongest storms.

As the evening continues, storms may grow into a larger cluster, maintaining a risk for severe weather as they move toward the Great Lakes region.

Residents in Iowa are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the day and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued.
