NORTH CAROLINA — A man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
Police said the crash occurred around 2 a.m. near the intersection of South Benbow Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The roadway between Cambridge and Bothwell streets was temporarily closed while emergency crews responded but has since reopened.
Investigators said the driver, identified as Jefferson Lumby Zeledon, was traveling at a high rate of speed along South Benbow Road after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run in downtown Greensboro. As the vehicle approached Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, police said it veered off the road, crossed through the intersection, and struck a parked vehicle.
The impact caused the vehicle to overturn before coming to rest in a wooded area. Zeledon was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been notified.
Two passengers in the vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Police said impairment is suspected, and excessive speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
