Tennessee elementary school teacher charged after assaulting student

TENNESSEE — An elementary school teacher in Macon County has been indicted following an incident involving a student, according to the 15th Judicial District Attorney General’s Office.

District Attorney General Jason Lawson said a grand jury recently indicted Derek McCaleb on one count of misdemeanor assault. The charge is related to an incident that allegedly occurred at Lafayette Elementary School.

Lawson said the case was assigned to an investigator several weeks ago at the request of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

In a statement, the Macon County School System said McCaleb has been suspended. Officials added he has been employed with the school system for 15 years.

No additional details about the alleged incident have been released.

The case remains under investigation.
