Multiple Ohio schools announce closures for May

OHIO — Most public schools across Ohio are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars reviewed statewide.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. School systems across Ohio consistently designate the day as a full closure for students and staff, with calendars listing “Memorial Day – No School” or similar language.

A review of calendars from districts including Dublin City Schools, Akron Public Schools, and others confirms that May 25 is widely observed as a non-instructional day. In some districts, it is specifically noted that both schools and offices are closed.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Ohio. While some districts may include additional non-instructional days—such as teacher workdays, professional development days, or the final day of school—these vary by district and are not uniformly observed statewide.

In many cases, the holiday falls during the final stretch of the academic year. Several Ohio school districts schedule their last day of classes in late May, often just days after Memorial Day. For example, some calendars show students finishing the school year around May 28 or May 29.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Ohio students either return briefly to complete the academic year or are nearing the end of classes as districts transition into summer break.
