Multiple Oklahoma schools announce closures for May

OKLAHOMA — Most public schools across Oklahoma are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars reviewed statewide.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. As a result, school systems across Oklahoma consistently designate the day as a full closure for students and staff. Calendar data from districts such as Union Public Schools and others show “Memorial Day – No School” or similar designations on May 25.

Additional school calendars, including those from Tulsa-area and statewide programs, also confirm that schools are closed on that date, reinforcing that the holiday is widely observed across Oklahoma’s education system.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Oklahoma. Other non-instructional days—such as the last day of school, teacher workdays, or potential weather make-up days—vary by district and are not consistently observed statewide.

In many cases, the academic year in Oklahoma concludes in late May. Several districts list their final day of classes around May 22, just days before Memorial Day, with the holiday occurring after the regular school year has ended.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Oklahoma students have either already completed the school year or will not return for additional instructional days, as districts transition into summer break.
