Multiple Louisiana schools announce closures for May

LOUISIANA — Most public schools across Louisiana are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district calendars reviewed statewide.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. As a result, school systems throughout Louisiana consistently designate the day as a full closure for students and staff.

Calendar data from several Louisiana school districts—including those in Lafayette Parish and St. Mary Parish—confirm that May 25 is listed as “Memorial Day” or “no school,” with campuses and offices closed. Additional district calendars, including virtual and parish systems, also show no classes scheduled on that date.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Louisiana. While some districts may include other non-instructional days—such as records days, exam periods, or the final day of school—these vary by parish and are not uniformly observed statewide.

In many cases, the holiday occurs just after the end of the academic year. Several Louisiana school systems schedule their final student days in mid-to-late May, often around May 20–22, with Memorial Day falling shortly afterward.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Louisiana students have already completed the school year or will not return for additional instructional days, as districts transition into summer break.
