Multiple Virginia schools announce closures for May

VIRGINIA — Most public schools across Virginia are scheduled to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars reviewed statewide.

Memorial Day, observed on the final Monday of May each year, is a federally recognized holiday honoring members of the U.S. military who died in service. As a result, it is widely observed by school systems across Virginia, with districts consistently listing May 25 as a full closure for students and staff.

Calendar data from several Virginia school divisions—including those in Fairfax, Prince William, Chesterfield, and Wythe counties—confirm that schools and offices will be closed on that date.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday resulting in widespread school closures across the state. While some districts may schedule additional non-instructional days, such as teacher workdays or early dismissals, these are not consistent statewide and do not affect all students.

Some districts may also observe other dates, such as religious holidays or workdays, but those vary by locality and are not universally recognized across Virginia school systems.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Virginia students will return to class for the final stretch of the academic year. Many school divisions are scheduled to conclude the 2025–2026 school year in mid to late June.
