TENNESSEE — A man is facing multiple charges after police say he assaulted an officer while being arrested for driving under the influence in Chattanooga.

According to the Chattanooga Police Department, the incident began around 3:22 a.m. on April 4 when an officer observed a pickup truck make an illegal turn on Market Street.

Police said the officer followed the vehicle and observed it swerving into oncoming lanes while reaching speeds of about 55 mph. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver complied after being instructed to put the vehicle in park.

Authorities identified the driver as 26-year-old Carlos Moore. Officers said he showed signs of impairment, including glossy eyes and slowed speech.

Police said Moore initially refused to exit the vehicle but later complied, appearing unsteady on his feet and stumbling toward the curb. He admitted to drinking at multiple bars and agreed to field sobriety testing, where officers said he failed to follow instructions.

Investigators said Moore was taken into custody, and officers found two digital scales, plastic baggies, rolling papers and $944 in cash on him.

During the arrest, police said Moore became aggressive and resisted while being handcuffed. Officers were able to place him in a patrol car, but when removing him for a more thorough search, he allegedly kicked an officer.

Authorities said Moore was treated at a hospital, where a warranted blood draw was conducted, before being booked into the Hamilton County Jail.

Moore faces multiple charges, including assault on a first responder, driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and several traffic-related violations.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 9.

The case remains under investigation.
