LOUISIANA — A 62-year-old woman is dead following a crash involving a bicycle in New Orleans, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Police said the crash happened around 11:57 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Toulouse Street and North Claiborne Avenue in the Treme neighborhood.

According to investigators, the woman was riding her bicycle and had stopped to wait for traffic to clear so she could cross Claiborne Avenue.

Authorities said a vehicle in the right-hand lane traveling east on North Claiborne stopped to allow her to cross. However, police said a second vehicle traveling in the left lane did not stop because its view was obstructed by the stopped vehicle.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, and the woman was pronounced dead there.

Officials said both drivers remained at the scene. Investigators noted the driver who struck the woman did not appear to be impaired or speeding, and no citations have been issued at this time.

The victim’s identity and official cause of death will be released by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office after next of kin are notified.

The investigation remains ongoing.
