ALABAMA — A routine checkpoint in Scottsboro led to a drug arrest late Thursday night, according to the Scottsboro Police Department.
Police said officers assisted with a multi-agency safety checkpoint around 11:37 p.m. on April 3 along Veterans Drive near Andrew Jackson Way.
During the checkpoint, officers stopped a green vehicle with two people inside. Authorities said the driver was unable to provide proof of insurance and was issued a warning citation.
Officers then asked both occupants to step out of the vehicle while a K-9 unit conducted a free-air sniff. Police said the K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, leading officers to search the vehicle.
According to investigators, the search uncovered several baggies containing a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Authorities said the items were located in the vehicle and on the passenger, identified as Heather Williamson.
Williamson was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana in the second degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said she was initially taken to the Scottsboro City Jail and later transferred to the Jackson County Jail on the felony charge.
The investigation remains ongoing.
